This post is a bit late (my intention was to do it last Tuesday), but I’ve been so busy with getting settled into uni that it didn’t happen.

If you’re a PSD Student (Professional Software Development) at Swinburne, you are a member of a rather small but elite group of people. Or at least this is how the PSD lecturers see it anyway. As a result, you get to do a whole heap of fun things outside of classes that the other IT students don’t get to do. One of these is The Ama-SWIN Race, which is an orientation activity designed to help you get to know all the people in the class.

The premise is very similar to the show called The Amazing Race, basically you visit different checkpoints and collect instructions, then follow them. For the first part of the day, we were going to checkpoints all over Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus, collecting things and doing fun geeky challenges like stepping through a sorting algorithm and playing air hockey. However we eventually encountered a stop which said we had to go into the city. So, we did, and ended up in a mall in the CBD for lunch. After that we were sent on a wild goose chase through the city finding lots of different places and collecting different bits of information. I won’t go into too much detail (next year’s PSD’s might read this and use it to get an advantage!), but I will say that we visited pretty much every major attraction in the Melbourne CBD. Crown Casino was nice.

Anyway, we eventually came back to Camberwell to receive another brain-bending puzzle. Once we figured it out, we sprinted back to Swinburne to pick up our free PSD T-shirts and to enjoy a barbecue. All in all it was a fun, yet tiring day. I think I walked/ran more that day than I had in the past few months, so my legs were pretty-much dead by the time we had finished. However it was worth it for the experience of meeting everybody, the new-found familiarity with getting around in the CBD, and of course the free T-shirt.
