A timesaver for Specialist Maths

School

If you’re doing Specialist Maths this year in VCE, you undoubtedly know how annoying tank questions are. Those are the questions about the amount of a chemical in a tank. It’s annoying having to work out the inflow and outflow, then having to solve the differential equation to get the amount of chemical in terms of time. What if you didn’t have to go through all this kerfuffle?

I’ve sat down and done a generic tank question proof which works for pretty much all of these questions. Instead of sitting there for five minutes flipping and solving the DE, you can just plug the numbers into this generic formula to give you your equation. Excellent!

However, you will fail your Specialist SACs and/or exam if you use this quick way, since you won’t be showing any working. So it’s a better idea just to use this to check your answer. :D

Here’s the proof (260KB PDF)

    Looks good :)
I don’t often use generic formulae; I like just doing the working out. I’ve done so many questions like this, I’ve memorised how to do them :)

Which Specialist text book do you use, anyways?
