It’s a double dare!

Computing

So on MSN tonight, I kicked the idea of switching to Linux to my main man Matt. Why? Well, it’s because of a few things. Firstly, Beryl is very nice looking. Not as in a woman called Beryl, I mean the desktop manager software for Linux. There are countless demos on YouTube of it, with snow falling on the desktop, spinning desktop cube, etcetc. It just looks cool and shiny. Secondly, I would get Vista but I don’t want to pay $400 for an OS which won’t even let me do a clean install. Screw that. And, thirdly, the install of Windows on the laptop is bogging down like most do after a few months of heavy installing/reinstalling stuff.

Anyway, point is, now my friend Matt and I are going to switch to Linux completely for one whole month on our main computers (for me my Dell, for Matt his ThinkPad). However, I will still maintain a copy of Windows in VMWare as I will still need to use Sony Vegas for a few things. There apparently is no good video editor for Linux. Or is there? This is one of the reasons I’m doing this, to see what is on the Linux platform, what isn’t, what’s great, what sucks, etc.

When am I starting my Linuxy month? In a little while, I’ve got to backup all my stuff first. But, it’s under way right now. :P

So it should be an interesting experience. And, it’s a double dare. :P

:P I dont think my ThinkPad’s 512Mb of RAM is going to run Vmware very well. But meh, I’ve got my other machines for windows after all.

    Goodluck!

512mb … it might be a little slow, but I ran VMWare running XP on my Athlon desktop which had 512mb of RAM, it worked fine (a little slow). Just use Windows 2000 in a VM. Less resources, and generally better. :P

I would have made the permanent change if I could set up my wireless on Ubuntu without the need to drag a 20 m Ethernet cord through my whole house.

I ran VMWare on my desktop PC, with 384 MB RAM… It was a bit slow, but still usable.

Anyways, good luck, and I hope your Linux experience is as good as mine :)
