11 Weeks of holidays … and, loving it.
An IM conversation a few days ago prompted me to write this blog post:
JamesSmith: you havn’t updated your blog in a while, I presume nothing exciting’s been happening latley?
Ben²: yeah, you could probably say that
(name changed to protect the innocent, though I’m predicting an angry IM conversation tomorrow
)
So what have I been doing lately? A few things. Are they really non-exciting? Maybe. Among several things, I’ve updated the site. Noticed anything? Among the new features:
- Trading Post – Check out the things I’m selling, and what I’m looking to buy.
- Post Icons – Now there are beautiful big 96-pixel icons that automatically appear in each post to show you what category it’s under. I don’t quite have all of the icons done yet but most of them work.
- Blogging via SMS – Now thanks to LetMeParty.com, I can blog via SMS. This will be great for all those .. uh … breaking news events … erm, yeah. Okay, so it’s pointless.
- Minor Theme Changes – There are a few little changes I’ve made in various places, most insignificant.
I’ll admit I’ve been pretty lazy when it comes to site changes. This is partially because I’ve been doing other things:
- Setting up my brand ass-spanking new Linksys WRT54GL WiFi Router. It’s awesome. I’ve finally got WiFi at my house, after wanting it for about 4 years.
- Testing a dead motherboard I’ve had for about 4 months. Somehow I insert the CPU into this motherboard the wrong way (!) and thought at the time, this has to be screwed. However, I just bought a dirt-cheap AMD Sempron 2800+ processor and 256MB of RAM for it and chucked them into the motherboard, and to my surprise it fired up fine. Now I’ve got to decide what to do with it. A machine like it is practically useless to me, unless I make it a low-end server. Bleh.
- Wiring up my house with ethernet cable. It’s all done now, and it’s slick. Though it seems redundant because of the WiFi router I set up, it’s conveniant for my desktops because they won’t be stuck on a shared 54Mbit connection.
- Christmas shopping.
- Digging.
- Putting tapes onto CD for people.
- Checking out uTorrent’s WebUI public beta. It’s amazing.
- Reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time for English class.
- Contemplating why I let my maths teachers persuade me to do Monash University First-Year Mathematics. I know it’s good, and will help me, but part of me is still not 100% sure about doing university-level stuff in Year 12. It’s a default yes at the moment though, as I’ve signed the papers.
- Going to bed at 3 and sleeping ’till 11. Yes, it’s definitely the holidays.
- Listening to Club 977 – Eighties internet radio station. I’m pathetic.
- Building an MP3 jukebox using an old PC. I’ll post later to elaborate on this, I think I might have a pretty nice system going.
So I’ve done quite a bit in the last three weeks. I’ve still got up until the end of January for my holidays; how awesome is this! It’s an extended break because our school is either too stupid or too lazy to start teaching us Year 12 coursework in the remainder of Term 4 like other schools are doing now. While we’re losing a competitive edge by bludging, I’m not one to complain.
