Ben Returns To The Internet, with a vengance!

Computing

After a one-and-a-bit month hiatus, I’ve finally got my DSL connection to the wonderful world of the internet back. Yay!

So where was I? Well, we have just finished building a new house, approx 2KM south of where I was before. It’s quite nice, with both aesthetic features (a cool garage! with dark purple walls!) and functional features (Ethernet cabling to every room!). Anyway, a week before we were to move into our house, we called Telstra and told them we were moving. Unfortunately, due to delays caused by Telstra (I think the guy said something about having to count the millions they are ripping off people with their cheap DSL plans), we didn’t get a phone line until the end of October. Then, we had to call our ISP, Internode, to tell them we were moving, which took about a week and a half to arrange. At the same time, I had exams. If the internet had have been here while I was studying for my exams, I probably would have spent a lot more time procrastinating, looking at a life without the hell of VCE. :P

So now, exams are finished, classes are finished, and my internet connection is back. What did I miss? Freaking everything: Windows Vista released to manufacturing, Office 2007 released to manufacturing, Internet Explorer 7, Media Player, and Firefox 2.0 were released, Microsoft released the Zune … even the YouTube logo changed slightly! All these things passed me by! Why did October have to be so … eventful?

In my first 48 hours of proper, unrestricted internet access (I’ve had limited access at school, run by the Third Reich), I’ve rekindled my love affair with YouTube, Digg, Wikipedia, and the various forums I’m involved with. I’ve also been catching up on everything else that happened, saying hi to friends who thought I died / exploded / got a life, etc.

So, it’s been 48 hours, I’ve got the internet, I’ve got a garage, I’m under 20, have no commitments until Jan 31 when school resumes … why the hell haven’t I started up a Web 2.0 company yet?! Maybe it’s the fact that I haven’t finished wiring my house quite yet, or the fact that I can’t code PHP, C# or Ajax for shizzle. Beh, maybe this holiday season I’ll get my ass into gear and make some dynamic – tagging – blogging – ajax – webservice – googlemaps – flickr – digg – api – mashup. :P

On an un-related note, I’ve gotten a friend to … obtain… the latest South Park episodes during my time without the ‘net, and I’ve got to say: the quality has increased about 300% over the first half of the season. The World of Warcraft episode was just great. I’ve got to hand it to South Park Studios, they seem to have learnt how to make awesome parodies. Take the latest episode for example. It makes fun of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. The opening for the show is on YouTube. Now, go over to the second-best site on the internet, SouthParkX.net, and watch the start of “Go God Go XII” (they have a Flash player streaming version courtesy of DailyMotion). Spot on. Ahaha.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings for now, I’ve got a heap of drafts in Windows Live Writer that I’m going to sort through and maybe publish.

–Ben
