The Conclusion of Blogging from Microsoft

Well, I’ve just about finished uploading the good photos of the Microsoft work placement to the gallery. There are a few more photos of the lounge and the Xbox machines, and check out the free drinks Microsoft provides their employees! Sweet!

Anyway, now onto something more serious. I’d like to thank the people at Microsoft Australia’s Melbourne office for what was overall a really good work placement. Big thanks go to Jill Martindale for organising the placement, and Dave Lemphers and Graham Elliot for giving Matt and I work during the placement. Thanks also for the over $1300 in free software, and the other miscellaneous free stuff that was randomly handed out during the two weeks. I need to find some swag to send you. :P

The placement was a really good experience. I highly recommend to any Year 10 students in Victoria to apply for the VITTA Student ICT Fellowship to be able to get a work placement here. For a work-experience placement, it’s great! Free stuff, bottomless drinks, Xbox machines, and the chance to find out about the inner workings of the world leader in software. It sure beats most other work experience placements, where you spend three weeks making coffee and sweeping floors in the hope that they might pay you $20 at the end of the placement. :D

Anyway, that’s all for my Microsoft placement now. I shall return to blogging about other random tech news and happenings.

Oh, by the way, regarding the latest site updates: I’ve installed a spam-prevention system for the blog. Unfortunately I’ve been getting lots of spam lately, and it’s a biach to go through and delete heaps of comments. I’ve found a great WordPress plugin called WP-Gatekeeper which I’m going to test out. It’s easier than most spam-prevention systems. With this system, you don’t have to type in a number to post: you just have to answer a very very easy question. :D On another note, I’m currently testing out some new web forum software called Vanilla. If I can get it to how I like it, this site may very well have its own discussion forum. If you’re interested in beta testing, send me an email via the contact form.

This new commenting mod is intimidating me. It makes me feel as if I’m retarded. Anyway, use VB software for the forums. Wink… wink.

LOL, that really isn’t the intention. It’s designed to be enough to keep automated computers out, but not as annoying as having to read something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Captcha.jpg . At least it’s not asking quantum physics questions :P

Another person that did the ICT Fellowship… I did it as well :D
Did you enjoy working at Microsoft? Was there anything you didn’t like? Did anyone use Linux? :D

Have you tried Akismet (www.akismet.com)? It’s excellent for spam prevention. I use it on my blog, and no spam has gotten through at all :)

Simple Machines Forum is better than any other free forum system :)
