Blogging from Microsoft: Day 9 - zOMGFREESTUFF!1111 and work
I’m writing this from Day 9 at Microsoft, it’s about 4:20PM and I’ve decided to blog now rather than later. I’m going to be uploading to my gallery a selection of pics of our offices, and the beasty servers we’re in temporary control of. We obtained another server today: like the previous one,a dual-core Xeon at 2.8GHz Dell PowerEdge 2800, but the difference is that this newer beast has 4GB of DDR2 ECC RAM. Whoo. It’s fast. It’s running Windows Server 2K3 Enterprise 32-bit at the moment, because of some compatibility issues with some things. Meh.
Been working quite a bit on this Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals : this demo shall be entertaining to say the least. It’s kinda hard to use a program that has documentation as handy as this:

Hmm … well, hopefully it should all be good. Or that’s a lot of free swag we’re going to have to give away …
We also showed Graham (who recently came back from some conference in Cairns?) our progress regarding our web development work. He’s happy with it. We’re happy with it. Everybody wins! …. or not.
And now for the justification of this post’s odd title: zOMGFREESTUFF!1111
Today for absolutely no reason at all, Lemphers handed me a free boxed copy of Windows XP Pro and a boxed copy of Office 2003 Professional. Nice. An odd thing striked me though: with Microsoft’s big campaign to get Service Pack 2 onto all of our machines, why did I get a copy of XP which appears to have Service Pack 1?! Meh, I’m not complaining, creating a slipstreamed install CD isn’t that hard. nLite is good.
(or, I could delve into the command prompt and do it manually if I really wanted to). The other cool freebie I got, apart from an estimated $1100 in fully-licensed software, is a cool mini soccer ball plastered with Microsoft product logos. Schweet. Pics are coming later, I’ll post again when my gallery has cool OMGPIX in it.
Damnit, my work placement is going to end tomorrow … I’ll have to go back to that cold, dark, depressing, n00b hell called School next week … damnit.
That’s all for now,
–Ben
