Blogging from Microsoft: Day 8 – A big task

Just finished day eight of Microsoft, and it seems to have gotten progressively better and worse. We’re still in the hands of David, who has now given us an interesting task: we’ve got to put on our Developer Evangelist hats and prepare a presentation on the newly released Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals CTP. This presentation has to go for an hour. This is going to be quite a task, as I don’t have much database experience, and neither does Matt (the other guy doing the fellowship). So now I’m trying to learn about Microsoft SQL Server 2005, and learn the language of Transaction SQL, as well as learn about the cool things you can do with the VS Team Edition for Database Professionals, all to prepare for a presentation on Friday where I have to look like I know everything about it. It’s cool but scary and difficult at the same time: I’ve got a chance to do my own semi-keynote, like what you’d see at a CES or a product launch, but at the same time I’ve got to do it on a lot of stuff I really don’t know much about. I hope I can get this nailed, otherwise it’s going to suck badly.

So yes, a lot of the time today was spent working on this, even though we were only given this project and the software about an hour before lunch. We went and lunched with David, who told us some interesting things about career choices in the IT field. Apparently Microsoft interviews are gruelling to say the least, eight hour grilling sessions where you could be expelled at any time. o_O

But that’s all for now, I just installed the Windows SDK Beta 2 and all the .NET 3.0 stuff onto my computer, time to play a bit with XAML! :D (well it’s supposed to be fun, it looks fun..)

LOL, don’t worry Benji, you’ll do fine. Just make sure you have some swag on stand-by that you can dispense into the angry crowd should your demo tank ;)
