Blogging from Microsoft: Day 6 – Dual Core
Huzzah! Just finished day 6 of my Microsoft placement. Things have started to become a bit more exciting. Finally we’ve finished as much work as we can do on the eCommerce site: our supervisor is away for a few days, and we’ve done pretty much all we can do, so now we have moved on. We are now being looked after by a guy called David. Today he gave us an overview of how multithreading works and why dual core processors are a lot better performance-wise compared to normal processors and hyperthreading. He then gave us our task, to reformat a server with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 edition. We’re working on a beast of a server: a Dell PowerEdge 2800 with a dual-core Intel Xeon 2.8GHz processor, 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 with ECC, and two hotswappable Seagate Cheetah 10,000RPM SATA2 hard disks with 148GB of storage each. Very nice machine, even though the fans on it are crazy: it sounds like it will literally propel towards you as it boots.
Oh, another unrelated thing, yesterday I went to a computer swap meet, which was really good. Bought some great bargains, a Netgear 802.11g wifi card for $35, a Logitech bluetooth headset for $60 and a 2.5″ portable hard disk enclosure for $15 just to name a few things. The best thing about the 2.5″ portable hard disk enclosure is its style: because it’s a cheap Chinese import, it has been made to look like a Sony VAIO, with the VAIO branding. You should see it, it’s a direct rip of the logo, so accurate it’s laughable. Photos later, when I get time.
Anyway, enough for now, keep reading the blog, there’s still four more days left!!
