Now I’m 16

I was going to post this a bit closer to Sunday, but I just didn’t get around to it. On Sunday I turned 16, yay! Unfortunately my birthday seemed to hit on Mothers Day (it does every few years) but it was still alright. Had a quiet one, went out with some friends the previous night, didn’t do particularly much.

However, one thing I did do: I ordered my notebook! I had been meaning to get a notebook for a while, and I need one for school. However, I wanted one which was future-proof, meaning a fast processor, plenty of RAM, a reasonably-good graphics card … plenty of grunt to handle Windows Vista when it comes out next year. My original choice was an LG Xnote S1. This looked like a very nice notebook, 2GHz Core Duo, 1GB RAM, 100GB Hard Disk, 15.4″ screen, however I heard that the screen was a bit too glossy and it was dull, and also it seemed like it was going to be pretty hard to get my hands on one: the local computer places in my area are all useless. Heh, it seemed I could confuse the sales guys just by saying “Core Duo” :P

So anyway, I decided to instead order a Dell Inspiron 6400. I know, I know, Dell notebooks aren’t world renouned for their quality, but I configured it very nicely for quite a good price which included a very good warranty (3 years including theft protection!) and also I definitely knew I would be able to easily order one, so I didn’t care too much. The specs of this beast: it’s an Intel Core Duo at 2GHz, 2GB of 667MHz DDR2-SDRAM, an ATI Mobility Radeon x1400, 100GB 7200RPM SATA hard disk, XP Media Centre, and a 15.4″ UltraSharp LCD at 1680×1050 pixels. Pretty sweet. The graphics aren’t as good as I would have liked them to be (I wanted an x1600), but I’m not too much of a gamer anyway, apart from the odd game of CS:Source. As long as it runs Windows Vista’s Aero Glass, I’m fine with it :)

So come two weeks time, I should have a very nice notebook at my doorstep, and a nice wave of “Dude, you’re getting a Dell” jokes from my computer-literate friends. Heheh. :D

Also, it seems like my I Love Work video has received a warm response, my download tracker thingie says there have been 166 requests for the video since I put it up last week. That’s pretty good.

Anyway, I must go now. Perhaps my next blog post will be from the helm of my shiny new notebook :D

    Happy birthday. :D

Heh, cool that you ordered a notebook. I need one, don’t have the money at the moment though… this old 486 one from 1993 sitting in my room collecting dust isn’t really working.

    Heh thanks :)

And true to my word, I’ve gotten complaints from my friends about choosing to buy the Dell, ranging from “You should have got a MacBook Pro” to “Great job, you just ordered a piece of crap! You should have got a MacBook Pro!” :/

According to the Dell order tracker, I’ll get to find out in about 5 days whether I should have gotten something else :)

Dude! You’re getting a Dell! :D from a semi computer literate friend.

*pets Ben* There there… I’m sure you can repent with your next laptop, which is destined to have a shiny piece of fruit emblazoned on it’s lid…

Oh, but I’m not really in the mood for an .. ehm .. fruity notebook, I just need something that will do the job, run what I need it to run (Visual Studio, Premiere Pro, Macromedia Studio MX 2004, Counter-Strike…) and be future-proof (ie. run Vista). I don’t need to do it in style with some kind of … fruity … notebook. :D
